What is Community development?

Community Development is a process by which members of a particular community identify a need or a problem, and collectively take initiative to create positive change and sustainability, community development is usually supported by an agency or a third party as the necessary resources may not readily available.Kenny (2007) Stated that “ 

Community Development is a holistic approach grounded in principles of empowerment, human rights, inclusion, social justice, self-determination and collective action”. In many countries today we see the contrast between developed and underdeveloped communities and subsequently entire countries, high rates of fatalities due to crime, inaccessible health care, stress, related illnesses et cetera. 

Community development initiatives in Trinidad and Tobago mainly are supported by the Ministry of Sport and Community Development and partnered stakeholders, events like the Community Development Day, declared on July 5th 2013, is a day dedicated to the ministry educating persons on getting more involved in their communities and volunteerism in their area. 


Notable efforts such as the community education program serve as an opportunity to provide empowerment and sustainable development via the Skills Training Program. The objectives of the skills training program serve to increase the number of competent persons in a community and reduce unemployment in the process.

In essence the purpose of community development according to (Atieno,2015) “ The purpose of community development is majorly to build communities on the basis of justice, mutual respect and equality.
